by all accounts, whiskey disco has matured. each release unique, but compiled meticulously to meet some of the highest standards in the edit community. wd45 continues the trajectory with 4 tracks combining equal parts soul, boogie and disco. rastanils cuts up cheesy obscurity to reveal heavy disco vibes—this edit was smashed by mcde at numerous festivals in 2015. next up, the intriguing corsican brothers reappear after a 5 year absence from whiskey disco with a sliced version of i like it, beefed up bass and space on the platters with a touch of dub. side b exemplifies the weirdness only a b-side can… albions disco chopper is a stretched and phased party jam that does not stop. move to the inside for the lengthy and epic big time, a 9 minute exploration into rocking disco roots, courtesy of the eponymously named blaxploitation movie from 1977.

ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

spanish dj & producer, eduardo de la calle, has continued to explore the outer limits of the electronic palette since his cadenza records debut back in 2013, clocking up stellar releases for the likes of mule musiq, hivern discs, be as one and nonplus over the last couple of years. eduardo returns to cadenza in february with the ‘anima animus’ single, coupling two tracks of refined techno for your listening pleasure. taking inspiration from the psychologist/philosopher carl jung’s concept of anima and animus (and do take the time to explore this), eduardo marries arpeggiated synths and melodic chords with a soft kick and tantalizing hats, producing a slick piece of reflective techno that’s alive with melody and groove. on ‘north pole’, we get more of the signature ‘de la calle’ sound, subaquatic bass and searing, melancholic strings play out over a steady mechanical beat, nodding its head not only to the detroit masters but also to the european new wave sounds that influenced the motor city artists in the first instance. another assured single release from eduardo that will further solidify his place in the current electronic music landscape.

rushmore is a 1998 soundtrack to the wes anderson film of the same name. the songs mostly blend raw, adolescent urges and insecurity with an awkward grace, composed primarily of popular music from the 1960s. continuing with its soundtrack initiative, ume will be reissuing this classic soundtrack back on vinyl for the first time in years.
the 1998 wes anderson film, rushmore, starred bill murray, jason schwartzman, olivia williams, seymour cassel, and luke wilson. the soundtrack was scored by mark mothersbaugh and also features music by the kinks, cat stevens, the who, john lennon, zoot sims, faces, and more.

grow label returns with its ninth offering, an ep of four choice original works, each a very deep and specific imagination alive with detail. the artist creator this time is plantae who offers his first vinyl ep and it is altogether a refreshingly original experience. plantaes tracks are characterised by momentous baselines underlying layer upon layer of organic texture and intricate primal percussion, which come together for a sound quite otherworldly. descriptive in nature and so filled with peculiarity *tigshameran* is an album and experience hard to grasp, but this is one of its charms, and its originality will keep you coming back, time and again discovering new moments of intrigue. a very respectable debut record from plantae!
